Community Building Addressing Employee Burnout Employee burnout in some high demand service positions in urban communities may be considered an expected sequela, however, that need not be the case. As the Director of the Community Health Center, I will lead to providing the employees with the ability to practice in a collaborative environment to combat employee emotional fatigue and burnout and provide a positive work environment. The community building will assist the employee to be confident about their job because of the activities that promote self-maintenance and team building which will aid the group to become a functional interprofessional collaborative practice. Mickan, Hoffman, and Nasmith (2010) reported that using a collaborative practice model provides the health care workers with improved job satisfaction and role clarity that shares problems and supports one another. Using evidence-based care pathways that provide quality outcomes by teams who learn how to be collaborative in their approach have reported they felt better about the patient outcomes. The collaborative practice occurs when services are provided to a group by working together and taking on clear roles of responsibility. The method shares common goals and communicates the desired plan and outcomes for the patient. Using this approach will provide the patients of the Community Health Center with higher levels of satisfaction, better acceptance of the health care plan and fewer visits with better health care outcomes (Mickan, et al). The employees will feel successful in their efforts and will receive recognition of a job well done. While facilitating the Collaborative practice, it will be necessary to develop the team to be able to manage this experience. Teams can function more effectually when they meet on a regular basis, communicate in an honest and respective manner and have patient goals that are clear and attainable. Working in this way will assist developing positive relationships with the other team members. The health care team becomes more confident in their individual and team skills when they get feedback that the patients can achieve their goals. The value of good working relationships will be necessary to prevent feeling isolated and alone, which could also lead to feeling underappreciated and therefore, burned out (Mickan, et al. 2010). Activities to Support a Sense of Community As the Director of the Community Health Center, it is my responsibility to provide the opportunity for activities to facilitate working relationships, and development of the individual and group goals. We will need to learn how to become successful as communicators and effective at working collectively (Wood, 2012). Providing education on how to communicate and team build will be conducted by our local college professors and the student interns as volunteers to support the Community Health Center. It will also be important to be able to care for one’s self, so they are refreshed to care for others. At the Community Health Center, we will have the employees select from some activities to support self-care or renewal. We can seize the opportunity to provide onsite a yoga instructor who wants to help the Community Health Center with free sessions. If the yoga instructor is not available, we can use a Yoga DVD that was donated or secure one from the local library. Other activities of self-renewal are walking, painting, singing, dancing, some activity where you can feel energized and peaceful. As a team, we will look for a group and individual sessions to support our self-renewal. Another activity is to be a lifelong learner. We will engage the group to participate in a forward-thinking process of what they would like the situation to become. Utilizing this approach will help focus on what feels confident and achievable (Weiss, Tilin, Morgan, (2018). As a group, we will use the World Café approach as described by Weiss, et al. (2018). The World Café method starts with a brainstorming process that encourages the inclusion of different points of view to solve problems we have at the Community Health Center. The brainstorming sessions will focus on asking for input from the following kinds of reflective questions with these kinds of examples 1. Describe your personal values and the Community Health Center values and how do they support one another. 2. What is the community we serve and how do you relate to the community needs? 3. How can we engage as a collaborative team to help our patients? 4. How will we assess our success for our patients and us? Using the examples from the World Café description by Weiss et al., we will have the team form three groups and rotate to tables to answer the questions and provide time for brainstorming. The assessment of the brainstorming will provide ideas for our next steps of action plans and innovative ideas and issues. References Mickan, S., Hoffman, S. J., & Nasmith, L. (2010).
