betty Adams worked in the adult basic education division of Eastern Community College. She coordinated and taught courses in basic math, English, and reading, among other topics. Eastern Community College was located in a town of about 12,000 people in a rural part of a southern state. The town had suffered economically for some time, with the loss of jobs to foreign competitors as of late, as well as the decline in agricultural production and revenues. The community college in which Ms. Adams worked enrolled about 4,000 students. While the basic skills program was not a high priority in the community college overall, it was deemed an important aspect of the school, and was viewed as one way to help high school dropouts learn enough to pass their GED exams. Recently, the state had been offering various incentives to attract new businesses to the area. Because of these incentives, a large manufacturing plant had committed to build a facility in the town. This plant provided products for the airline industry and found the town to be an ideal location. Necessary to the company’s strategy was a large potential pool of workers who had basic reading and writing skills. Responding to the needs of the manufacturing company, the community college put Ms. Adams in charge of literacy program that could be offered to potential employees of the organization, as well as to members of the community in general. Ms. Adams was excited to be involved and went to work immediately in the planning and organization of the program. A few weeks into her work on this program, Ms. Adams heard about a local pastor who was very well known and popular in the town. The pastor wanted to schedule an appointment with Ms. Adams to discuss her new program. She was thrilled that her program had the interest of such a major community figure and she welcomed the meeting with the pastor. She envisioned multiple opportunities for the pastor to lend his support to the program. “I was excited that he could be a great role model for the value of literacy to these young students; many of whom have struggled with literacy issues all their lives,” she said. At the meeting, the pastor led the conversation with something that shocked Ms. Adams. He, himself, could not read. He memorized sermons and bible verses in order to fulfill his duties as pastor and relied on a variety of strategies to hide his illiteracy from his parishioners. He had heard about the program Ms. Adams was developing, and the reason he wanted to meet with her was to inquire about what he, himself, might do in order to learn to read. Ms. Adams took a few minutes to gather her thoughts after what she just heard. Questions: 1. If you were Ms. Adams, how would you handle this request from the pastor? What types of questions would you have for the pastor? 2. If you were the pastor, what would you see as the ideal way for you to improve your reading skills in this situation? 3. How should the status of the pastor in the community be considered (if at all)? 4. What factors of adult learning are in play in this scenario?

view. The questions I would ask would be, why would he decide to be a fraud regarding his
illiteracy levels, what has taken him that long before admitting his illiteracy, what does he ...
