Background Information
Plastic waste management is a global problem. However, it’s this thought at times makes people
think that they have not contributed little to the problem. As a school and a member of the Break
Free from Plastic Movement (BFFPM), each of us contribute to the overall problem though our
activities within the school.
Explanation of the Problem
The BFFPM has noted that plastic waste in the school is a real challenge. The movement has over
the years collaborated with other student bodies such as the Marshall Student Center (MSC) to
reduce the amount of plastic waste in the school (Sellick, 2020). Despite the awareness created,
the challenge continues. Many are the time that plastic litters around the school, especially during
the weekends despite the school having many plastic collection bins.
Cause of the Problem
2
Most of the students in school are aware of the plastic waste management problem. However, most
believe that they play very little to the problem and the solution. For this, they are less concerned
about how they use plastic products. The biggest problem in the school is not plastic disposal but
the amount of plastic used in the school. There have been efforts to reduce the amount of plastic
products in the school from the shops and cafeteria. Nevertheless, implementing non-plastic
containers has been difficult because it’s expensive and the preference for non-plastic containers
is low on the campus. As a result, shops and the cafeteria continue to use plastic containers.
Moreover, there has been pressure on the school management who have the power to make laws
and policies to reduce plastic use in the campus premises, but with very little significant assistance.
Impacted Population
Plastic waste is both a local and a global problem. USF is a small part of Florida but contributes
to the problem in the community and state as a whole. With this in mind, the campus has a
responsibility to itself and the community in general (McManus, 2019). Effects of plastic waste
management affect both the student, the community and contribute to the country's plastic waste
challenge. Plastic causes food safety problems if ingested, land pollution, and disrupts food chains.
Moreover, there are worries that waste collected at the school may not be disposed of correctly.
As a result, the plastic from the school has a direct effect on the school and the community
(Lassman, 2020). Moreover, the country is struggling with plastic waste management as the
amount disposed of exceed the disposable limit. As a school and part of a community, there is a
responsibility to take care of the ecosystem and the community from the effects of plastic waste.
How to Improve?
As we have seen above, plastic waste is a major issue in our school. Therefore, we need to come
up with strategies to manage this problem. In the first place, the most effective way to deal with
