Divorce has a long-term effect on children in their lives throughout the stages of child
development. Witnessing the loss of one parent, starting to live with a new stepfather/mother,
and moving to a new household after divorce exposes children to various challenging situations
(Fagan & Churchill, 2012). To a greater extent, life after divorce is changed for children. The
responses to the painful event of divorce are different if the child is still in childhood or has
entered adolescence. Divorce often intensifies a child's dependence while accelerating
dependence of adolescents. Divorce usually elicits a more regressive response from a small child
but elicits a very aggressive response from the teenagers.
The reasons for the variations between the replies of a child and an adolescent is because divorce
shakes up trust in dependency on parents who in turn have proved to be extremely undependable.
A child has a small understanding of the real issues unfolding while the adolescent understands
what happens with divorce
Convincing small kids of the permanence of the divorce between their parents is a hard task
when the child is fantasizing that one the parents will again live together. A child relies on the
wishful thinking to alleviate the painful loss caused by divorce believing that a reunion will be
possible in the end while an adolescent is quick to accept the permanence of divorce (Fagan &
