Philosophy 315 Kurt Nutting / Global Peace Studies 315 / International Relations 315 Fall Semester 2021 INTRODUCTION TO GLOBAL PEACE STUDIES FIRST WRITING ASSIGNMENT ON TRAMPLING OUT THE VINTAGE MONDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2021 The remaining take-home writing assignment is to submit brief summaries and critiques of the farmworkers’ union under the leadership of Cesar Chavez from the 1960s until the 1990s, as explained by Frank Bardacke in his book Trampling Out the Vintage. I will post six or seven assignments on this book, once a week through the end of the semester; to receive the full credit (ten percent of the final course grade) you will need to write and submit answers to five of them. You are to write a very short (approximately one or two pages, typed and double-spaced) essay on the following question: What was the bracero program, and why was it established? Why did farmworker organizations in California oppose it? How does Bardacke explain its ultimate demise? Critically discuss. To answer this question satisfactorily, you won’t need to do any research on it other than read the first portion of Trampling Out the Vintage (“The Founding,” chapters 1 – 10, pages 21 – 164). As always, be sure to make and keep a copy of your work, and please be aware of the requirements of academic honesty in writing your paper. A digital copy of your essay will be due, via the relevant “Assignment” link on the course iLearn page, no later than midnight on Monday, November 1, 2021.
