According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (2017), hazardous waste
is any material which if handled improperly can cause harm to the environment, human beings
and other living creatures health-wise. Hazardous materials exist in numerous forms and not only
limited to wastes produced during industrial production but also span to cover various wastes
emanating from non-industrial setting.
The EPA has set two criterions for identifying whether a material can be classified and
grouped under hazardous wastes. EPA already has a list of materials which they have already
categorized as hazardous wastes, and more wastes are likely to be added to this list with time if
they pose an imminent threat to the life of human beings, animals and the ecosystem. For a waste
to be included in the list of hazardous wastes, EPA first accesses the various types of wastes
commonly produced in an industrial setting, the amount released to the environment and the
danger they pose to human/animal health and the environment (United States Environmental
Protection Agency, 2017). The listed wastes are always considered hazardous in any setting
regardless of their chemical composition. Additionally, there are those wastes which display one
