Personal reflection In personal and academic development, a practical reflection is an important tool as it aids learners to develop critical competencies in leadership skills while undertaking academic endeavors. Personal reflection involves assessing of one’s actions, principles, attitudes and behavior. From my personal reflection, I noticed my lack of proactive approach to problems due to the fear of making mistakes and losing opportunities. My confidence would play an immense role in my decisions since if I realized that am against something, am likely to avoid approaching the challenge. This is an element that probably limits my thinking (De, 2013). The results of the study reveal that I have to improve my active listening and assertiveness discernments especially as exposed in interviews, group works and in the course of my learning experience. Additionally, my dominance in conversations should be more regulated. 2. Literature review It is imperative that I improve my active listening and self-assured perception skills as revealed from the findings. The weaknesses are noticeable throughout the results received from my peers. Previous studies show that feedback an individual gives in a conversation is influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Personal attributes and individual psychological set up are important especially in a show of confidence and/or composure. For instance, a confident and composed person tends to present themselves appropriately as opposed to those who are less so. According to (Biafore, 2013), such people are likely to be shaken by the moments since they anticipate the outcome. The Australian Psychological Association reveals that such motivators are prime influential determinants of anyone’s outward character. It is important for individuals to understand their strengths and weaknesses since by doing so, they are able to display their strengths while showing appropriate behavior by doing so, and one should also underline their weaknesses so as to understand how to correct their flaws. Besides, individuals also close in the gaps in the most preferred behavior and characters. According to (De, 2013), failure to do this will plunge a person into uncertainty hence being tense and less confident while trying to interact with those around them. Active Listening Active listening is a crucial trait since it allows a learner/listener to pay attention to the speaker, understand the responses and easily remember the contents. In my personal assessment of my communication abilities, I realized that this was one area that I needed to improve. I learnt that I could be able to obtain important information, understand them and enjoy learning by being an active participant/listener. Besides, I also realized that my concentration levels were very low thus making it difficult to make agreements with others. This, also, affected my ability to grasp new ideas in class since I was unable to fully concentrate throughout the lessons. To tackle this problem I have formulated new ways of checking these habits before they escalate and end up affecting my endeavors. Some of the ways I came up with to address this problem are as shown below: Paying Attention. Paying attention involves concentrating keenly and having the ability to fully acknowledge the speaker’s messages. It involves the ability to understand both the speaker’s verbal and nonverbal cues. Nonverbal cues that are important include but are not limited to; maintaining eye contact and paying attention to the body language of a speaker. It also involves the willingness and ability to keep away distractive thoughts that are not relevant to facilitate better understanding of content. Show Them That Am Listening. Good body language to show the speaker that you are keen and listening is also important because it serves to encourage the speaker by showing them you understand. Such gestures such as the nodding of the head where appropriate are an encouragement to the speaker and also crucial to one understanding the information being disseminated. Provide Feedback Feedback is an essential part of any conversation since it assists the audience to appropriately understand a message. Feedback is essential since it helps both parties understand that the information being passed has been fully understood or not. It is important to frame the feedback or response message in appropriate manner and pay key attention to detail. It may involve the asking of appropriate questions which serve to clarify ambiguous points. Correct feedback reveals to the communicator that am paying the utmost attention to the content being given (Green& Chartered Institute of Public Relations, 2016). According to Green& Chartered Institute of Public Relations, 2016, having a summary of the content on a periodical basis enables one to have a glance of the whole discussion since only the valuable pointers are reflected on thus quickly remembering the content of the conversation.

The ability to reflect on oneself is what is called personal reflection. It is a very important aspect
of academic learning as it assists in developing leadership skills. During academic activities, it is
very important for n individual to be able to reflect on themselves. Personal reflection entails
evaluating one's attitudes, behaviors, and decisions. After carrying out personal reflection on
myself I realized that I was more reserved than I thought. I was not good at jumping at new
opportunities or trying out new things. My fear of failure and disappointments has at one point or
another limited by thinking and participation in activities that would have been very beneficial.
