Case Study: A Small Matter of Trimming
Cheating is unethical conduct in which organizations must try as much as possible not
to be involved. Just like any other ethical issue, there are several reasons that make cheating
an undesirable practice in organizations. Prominently, cheating leads to the deception of the
many stakeholders of organizations. Some of these stakeholders include the government,
shareholders, suppliers, consumers, and retailers, among others. For example, an organization
can manipulate its revenues and expenses so that its books show inaccurate profits in order to
achieve certain goals. An organization may want to show potential investors that it is highly
profitable, and as a result, it may manipulate the books to reflect this desired position. On the
other side, an organization, in a bid to cheat the government and pay low taxes, may
manipulate the books to reflect low profitability. However, while appreciating the unethical
nature of these actions, there is a possibility that the organizations may have some ethical
justifications for their actions. This paper evaluates the actions of an upcoming company,
Dentrac Consultants, Inc., which was involved in a project that, at face value, would appear
to be unethical. The organization was involved in some data manipulation practice that was
aimed at achieving particular goals.
