From your graph, I read this:

x(4)=2 meters

x(2) = 2 meters

x(3) = 3 meters

so the average speed v is:

v ={ [x(4)-x(3)] + [x(3)-x(2)]} / (4-2)= (1+1) / 2 = 1 m/sec

whereas the velocity when particle travels in the (2,3) interval is:

v_1= (2,0) m/sec

whereas, the velocity when the particle travels in the (3,4) interval is:

v_2 = (-2, 0) m/sec

so the average velocity, is:

v_1+v_2 = 0
