After being pioneered and established by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I as a symbol of
Christendom I in the sixth century, the Hagia Sophia remains Muslim Ottoman Empire’s
emblem. Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque from a cathedral by Fatih Sultan Mehmed II
in 1453 after conquering Constantinople. The building served as a worship centigrade of
Muslims who flocked its environments to perform daily prayers for hundreds of years. The
building was an architectural masterpiece standing high with its towering minarets and imposing
grey dome. However, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, modern Turkish Republic’s founder converted the
Mosque into a Museum in the early 1930s in a drive to modernize and secularize modern
Turkey. The history of Hagia Sophia's political and ideological battle dates back for centuries
with conflicting ideas and propositions of every leader that came into power. Today, the are
plans of converting the building back into a mosque, a move that major political debates have
surrounded. Therefore, the paper aims to discuss the impact of converting the building back into
a mosque.
