Description

For this Assignment you will discuss your experience using a Web-based EHR. You will design and construct a Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation that will be presented in a training session for new HIT students coming into your facility. Please include the following topics in your presentation:

  • Describe your experience with the Web-based EHR.
  • Discuss the possible challenges one would face to convince healthcare providers to use this type of EHR.

WEB BASED EHR INTRODUCTION
▸ The purpose of an EHR is to allow medical professionals to
retrieved vital data regarding the patient in real time and
enhance the collaboration with other departments.
▸ Overall the purpose is to enhance the quality of medical
care.
▸ An innovative method to do this is through web based EHR
which do not require any internal serves to function as they
are usually cloud based (Kano,2010)

EXPERIENCE WITH E-CLINICALWORKS
▸ The web based EHR which was chosen for this presentation is entitled eClinicalWorks.

▸ The company in charge of this software was founded during the year 1999 with a clear goal of reducing
paperwork in the medical field and promoting inter-department communication.
▸ In order to be able to achieve this goal, they slowly started to automate the medical systems until they were
able to provide an easy to use EHR for those institutions who are not able to maintain their own servers.
▸ The overall purpose of the cloud based EHR is to minimize potential operational costs while also reducing the
potential errors associated with these system.
▸ In addition, the company is in charge of providing various tools aiming to enhance the connection between
the existing service providers and potential clients. (Kano,2010)

EXPERIENCE WITH THE WEB BASED EHR
▸ While testing this software, it was evident that the virtual interactions
established is very secure and allows connection with various telemedicine
applications to ensure the highest quality of care.
▸ In addition, the interface is user friendly but also allows massive
customization in order to meet the needs of any type of institution
▸ In case there are patients who are transitioning from any other available
systems, this web based EHR also comes with conversion bundles provided
for free to make the entire change easier and without any issues.
▸ In addition, the system comes with talk to write function which can save
even more time as care providers can verbally dictate the assessment and
the system automatically generates it. (Torre et al.,2013)

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES
▸ One of the elements which raise concerns regarding the usage of this specific EHR software is in regard to the
2017 lawsuit they had to handle.
▸ It was stated that the company obtained a false permission of function for their software despite many claims
that some of their statements regarding the functionality of the program are not real.
▸ For example, one of the whistleblowers stated that the software failed to record specific medication dosages
and treatment plans as recommended by guidelines which imposed a high risk on the patients outcome.
▸ In addition, elements of patient security were also approached as the system seemed to be vulnerable for
external attacks which might lead to a leak of private medical data (Torre et al.,2013)

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES (II)
▸ Another challenge is in relation to the way the software is managed.

▸ Many of the users of this application states that there exist significant inconsistency in terms of the
ticket services and how issues are approached by the maintenance team when they occur.
▸ The explanation of this problem relies on the fact that eClinicalWorks focuses on functioning at an
international level which means that many of their departments are spread around the globe, thus
creating barriers when it comes to communication and solving issues immediately.
▸ The system automatically creates an education note for the patient to use, but as i tested this feature,
it fails to deliver accurate and easy to understand notes. (Torre et al.,2013)

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES (III)
▸ In addition, investment limitations should also be approached in this part of the presentation.

▸ Based on their website, there exist a high initial investment which is related to a minimum return. In
many instances this is considered not be feasible.
▸ The company has a capital shortage and the...
