The money supply curve is vertical because the quantity of money is fixed at a level determined by the Fed. The Fed can influence the money supply by increasing or decreasing the number of reserves in the system, banks can influence the money supply by adjusting the number of loans they give. Student 2 The Federal Reserve is responsible for a host of functions in the government when it comes to the economy. One of the main functions of the FED, as it’s called, is to provide oversight over banks and other financial institutions operating in the United States. They provide consumer protections and securities and oversee those transactions. Another important function of the Federal Reserve is to set the base interest rate that banking and financial institutions use when providing loans and services to the public. The Federal Reserve sets the prime rate as it is called and routinely will raise or lower that base rate. During this pandemic, the Federal Reserve has lowered the Prime Rate, and that interest rate is expected to remain near zero for at least the next few years. The FED does this in order to help stabilize the economy and promote more investment in things like homes and vehicles.
