Since the 20th century, gang activities in the United States have become increasingly widespreadthe District of Columbia and all the 50 states report gang problems. These reports have increased
or 7 o the past 10 years (Decker, 2016). However despite the steady growth of the number and
the size of gangs in the country and the criminal violence and behavior they spawn, it is not well
known of the dynamics that are driving people to indulge in gang activities and how to combat it.
For instance, there is no consensus that exists on how gangs are formed and few prevention
measures have been evaluated (Arciaga, 2010). A recent Juvenile Justice Bulletin that was
published by the Department of Justice, Delinquency Programs and Office of Juvenile Justice
present a compilation of current researches on gangs, which include data on the state of gang
problem in the United States. It outlines the reasons why people join gangs, attractions and risk
factors that increase the youth’s propensity in joining gangs and how these gangs are formed.
The authors explore how community members can be able to assess the gang activities in their
areas and hence provide necessary measures to intervention and prevention activities. The report
also describes and outlines a number of promising and effective programs that can help to
preventing gang violence and youth delinquency (Miller, 2014).

In most cases youth join gang if they are engaging in delinquent behavior are violent or
aggressive, have many problems at school, experience multiple caretaker transitions,
associate with other gang-involved youth or they are living in community where they are
unsafe and where many youth are in trouble.

must take measures to strengthening schools and families, improve community supervision,
