STUDENT RESPONSE#1 SALVATORE We are all human and should treat everyone with love and respect, no matter race, creed, sexual orientation, or preference. By definition, there are differences between individual and systemic racism for sure. In short, Systemic racism is institutional racism, or a large organization that is racist. Individual racism would be an individual being racist. The next question... are any of these at work with the killing of Trayvon Martin or Jordan Davis. I think individual racism may have played a role in either case. I also think individual racism is still existent in today’s society, but not like it was even 20 years ago. As for systemic racism. I don’t think in today’s society exists. As a former marine, union iron worker, and first responder, I have worked with, and for people of all races. I think even 20 years ago systemic racism existed but in todays society, equal opportunity and current up bringing of this generation has diminished systemic racism. I think individual racism, unfortunately, will always exist. Talking with friends, they also agree. I spoke with a fellow work peer of color, and she agreed. She is a friend but also a supervisor. She agreed that in the line of work we do, she is not discriminated systematically or even by individuals she works with. She told me a quick story and I would like to share it… she said Ironically enough, during a protest for equal rights, people of all races were marching in the protest and yelled racial slurs at her while she stood there to maintain order and safe passage for them. They were marching against systematic racism. I think the media plays a big role in pushing a racial war and agenda in order to sell stories and divide the people. STUEDNT RESPONSE#2 SOFIA Individual racism is based on discrimination and assumptions against another race and is related with a people's words, attitudes, and behaviors. Individual racism is, for example, the view that a white person is biologically better to a person of color. Individual racism and cultural racism, on the other hand, are institutionalized into systemic racism. Systemic racism focuses on entities and organizations rather than individuals. Jordan Davis case was an example of individual racism, in which the convict asked Jordan and his friends to turn down the music because it was too loud, and it is widely assumed that black people rap and listen to loud music as a system. But it wasn't racism up until this moment; when Jordan became irritated and responded in an unpleasant manner, the convict took it personally and felt racially insulted, so he fired 10 rounds, killing Jordan. As it seemed that the music's volume was stereotyping systemic racism, he urged them to turn it down. The termination was thereafter viewed as an act of individual racism. What is your impression? I attempted to give you examples of many of the artists, sculptors and famous people that Keller alludes to in her essay. Which one really intrigued you? If you had an opportunity to actually see the items up close, which two would you choose to see first? What makes you say this? In your response, consider the painstaking detail of the sculpture, so much so that the statue looks alive or the vibrant colors of the art work. Be specific and consider this a form of "armchair travel." https://www.britannica.com/list/10-famous-artworks-by-leonardo-da-vinci https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenon

Discussion response (individual and systemic racism)
Student 1
Hello Salvatore,
First, I like the way you articulate the issue of individual and systemic racism. There is no
doubt that individual racism played a huge part in the killing of Trayvon Martin and Jordan
Davis. This menace still exists today, although it is not worse as it was some decades ago. I
also agree that, unlike individual racism, systemic racism does not exist today. Civilization
and globalization have meant that people are more tolerant of each other. Organizations do
not find it hard to employ individuals from a...
