the area of the garden is 28 x 45 ft^2

the path extends the dimensions of the garden by 3 on each side

add 5 to each dimension and find the total area

subtract the area of just the garden from the total area.

Picture a large rectangle inside a slightly larger rectangle.

(28+5+5) x 45+5+5) = total area = 2090 ft^2
28 x 45 = garden area = 1260 ft^2
total area - garden area = 2090-1260 = path area = 830 ft^2
