Explain the infant and under five mortality rates
An infant is a baby under the age of one year taking this into consideration Infant
mortality is the death of a baby before the baby’s first birthday. Infant mortality is measured by
the Infant mortality rate (IMR) which is the number of deaths of babies under the age of one for
per one thousand live babies. According to O’Neill the infant mortality rate in 2019 was about
5.7 deaths per one thousand live births this is about 57 infant deaths for every 1000 live births.
Despite such a large number of deaths it is considered to fair comparing with the past years; for
instance, in 2010 the IMR was 10.3 per 1000 live births (O’Neill, 2021). Infant deaths have
various causes with the leading cause of deaths being pneumonia, term birth complications
malaria measles and malnutrition. Moreover, other humanly factors are associated with infant
deaths like level of mother’s education concerning child development and sanitation.
On the other hand under-five mortality is the death of a child before reaching the fifth
