Jeffries and Carr Comparison/Contrast Activity
Using the Venn diagram attached, work together to begin listing similarities and differences between Jeffries’ and Carr’s
perspectives; clearly, there are some big differences between their perspectives, but it seems they could agree on some aspects
of the topics as well.
After you fill out the Venn diagram, determine what main question could be posed to both authors; remember, with my
comparison/contrast, I posed the main question of, “Should homeschooled students be required to take standardized tests?”
Then, I listed a series of sub-questions to help facilitate a comparison/contrast that goes point-by-point. There are many main
and sub-questions that could be posed about the two articles – it’s up to you and your interpretation of both articles and what
their main concerns seem to be.
Main Question: Is technology ruining the way we think and focus?
Sub-Question #1: How has technology altered the way in which we read books?
Carr’s perspective (or “answer”) to SQ#1: Reading a long novel used to be an easy and enjoyable
undertaking. With the rise of the internet, viewers now demand instant gratification through skimming and
searching. Articles are left unfinished and dissected due to a lack of ability to focus. The ability to sit and read more
than a few measly pages in a book has become daunting and unappealing. We can no longer immerse ourselves in
literature without seeking distractions, and feeling restless and bored.
