▪ At the end of this lecture student should be able
to explain the etiopathogenesis,
pathophysiology, clinical manifestations,
diagnosis, treatment and complications of the
following conditions:
o TB Meningitis
o Encephalitis (HSV encephalitis, Acute disseminated
Encephalomyelitis- ADEM )
o Fungal meningitis
o Brain and spinal cord abscesses

TBM BACKGROUND
Most serious complication of TB infection, Usually
due to M. tuberculosis
Fatal without effective treatment, significant
morbidity even with treatment
In children CNS involvement occurs during primary
infection (rather than reactivation). TB of the CNS
takes two forms: TBM and tuberculomas
Usually results from hematogenous spread from a
primary focus (lungs)
Variable presentation, but usually onset is insidious
– (More rapid in infants and young children)
