Martin Luther King and Alicia Garza: Speech Comparison
Often, when giving speeches, individuals must place particular importance on their body
language, tone, delivery style, environment, and many other factors that allow for a speech's
perfection. Two extraordinarily well-done speeches, yet vastly different manners, are Martin
Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech from 1963 and Alicia Garza's Law for Black
Lives speech from 2013. In comparing these two speeches, the similarities and differences offer
tremendous insight into the many factors that make a speech impact, or lack thereof, especially
in terms of delivery style, body language, and the environment of the speech.
In 1963l, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech entitled I Have a Dream, which expressed
his dream of freedom, liberty, and equality for all -especially African Americans. In his speech,
he explains that despite African Americans being free in the eyes of the law, they are not truly
free and do not have the liberties they are deserving of due to segregation and discrimination.
This speech leaves a significant impact on the history of America as it offered visions of
overcoming the countries past treacherous treatment in the forms of discrimination and
segregation caused by racism (Bobbitt, 2007). During the height of civil rights movements in the
1960s, King's words left a tremendous impact on the world because of the way King presented
himself and his arguments.
