Abortion Laws and Ethical Considerations
Abortion is one of the most highly controversial topics in American society. The public is
split on the topic based on political and religious viewpoints. The social worker must be
impartial and put their personal views aside in order to meet the needs of the client. Even though
Abortion is a moral issue, the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the women’s right to have an
abortion. As social workers, it is important to be aware and compassionate and display
commitment to clients and their decision making processes. In the state of Maryland, abortion is
legal and the state is known for having one of the most permissive laws.
In Maryland, the governor enacted SB 162 in 1991 broadening the abortion rights in the
state (Shaw, 2015). As one of the most permissive states in the nation, Maryland allows late term
abortions, protects people who have abortions from being subject to legal consequences, allows
juveniles to abort without permission of a parent, and punishes healthcare workers who have a
moral opposition to abortion (Shaw, 2015). Social workers have a responsibility to support
clients in all efforts to change their lives even if they morally disagree with their choice to have
an abortion. Abortion is a moral debate. The social worker muss remain objective...
