Selected Decision
There are various treatments for depression. The decision I chose to use for this pediatric
patient was Zoloft 25mg used orally daily. Zoloft is the product name for sertraline, which is
deployed as antidepressant medicine. Their contrivance of action usually defines them as selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with the required skill towards the serotonin transporter
(Rao, 2013). Zoloft decreases the sensitivity of serotonin receptors and increases serotonin
neurotransmission. It also has the ability to block dopamine transporters which add to its
therapeutic actions.
Why I Selected this Decision
I selected the medication Zoloft because the treatment functions by reinstating the stability
of serotonin, which is a common ingredient in the brain. The treatment undertakes a wide-ranging
first-pass breakdown, its primary initial pathway of uptake being N-demethylation. It has a plasma
cessation half-life of 62-104 hours (Stahl, 2013). The half-life of the medication is an advantage
because it lowers the withdrawal reactions that can occur with abrupt discontinue of SSRI’s. Zoloft
is a medication that is approved for children and adolescents ages 6-12 years of age with an initial
dose of 25mg/day. Its primary target symptoms include depressed mood, anxiety and sleep
disturbance (Stahl, 2005). Zoloft is also a first-line choice for patients with atypical depression,
and the medication has its potential advantages for patients with fatigue and low energy. Also, the
absence of its effect on prolactin may make it a preferred choice for some children, adolescents,
and women (Stahl, 2013).
