Literature is essential because it provides the reader with enhancement in language, knowledge,
imagination and, most importantly, the diversity of the world. Heather Mac Donald’s article "Does
Harvard Consider Oscar Wilde "Marginalized”?” focuses on the positive effect of developing a
marginalized literature course for Harvard University.
Thesis statement:
Although, as stated in Mac Donald’s article, marginalization is a true issue in literature, a university
should not develop a marginalization course as a requirement for students. By singling out marginalized
literature, the literature is being made even more so diverse which will cause more harm than good.
By marginalizing “marginalized literature”, we will be affecting the people who don’t view literature as
marginalized, taking even more credibility from this literature and, most importantly, intensifying this
diverse issue even more than it already is.
