The role of the Transport layer in the Hybrid OSI- TCP/IP architecture
The Hybrid OSI-TCP/IP architecture is characterized by five layers that are the physical,
data link, network, transport and the application layer. Increased communication between
devices characterizes the Internet, and the ability to communicate is supported by the transport
layer thus defining why it is necessary to gain an in-depth understanding of the functionality of
this layer and the impact it has on networking. The transport layer is identified the fourth layer of
the hybrid OSI-TCP/IP.
Functionality of the transport layer
The functionality of the transport layer in the hybrid architecture is similar to the
transport layers in both the TCO/IP and OSI models. The transport layers are responsible for
managing end to end communication, flow control, reliability and network congestion control as
well as multiplexing and demultiplexing data from the various applications within the system
(Kozierok, 2005). The transport layer is integral to the functioning of the network by providing a
platform for the connection of various applications and devices.
End-to-end communication
It works to identify the proper application or ports targeted for each communication
stream. In a network, there are various applications or services that are currently operating and
sending data to each other. To ensure that the data is sent to the target application the transport
layer is responsible for assigning each application with a specific identifier that helps to ensures
that any...
