The Tango and Candombe
The United States culture is filled with a blend of aspects from different countries. Dance
is particularly borrowed from many native origins which import the culture through immigration.
Dance and music are two of the most dominant cultures in many countries and originate from
traditional events. Although most of the folk dances available in the U.S and borrowed from
foreign countries are blended with different styles to suit the dancers’ skills, they contain the
traditional heritage of the origin countries (Kaeppler, 2000). Every folk dance song has a
traditional significance that explains its past and its traditional origin. Understanding the folk
dance history and origin allows the scholar to link the folk dances to different aspects of the
community and understand its importance to the origin communities.
One of the most famous dance styles in the United States today is the Tango which
originates from the Brazil and Argentinian cultures. However, the dance is a fusion of many
native dances from the South American countries. One such traditional folk dance that fuses with
others to form the Tango is the Candombe. The Candombe is and Uruguayan dance that
originally came from the African slaves (Andrews, 2010). The dance is accompanied by unique
Candombe music to which people dance. The Uruguayan music is based on sets of drums as the
