Introduction
Sociopathy, also called antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), is defined by the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as “a pervasive
pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others, occurring since age 15” (APA,
2013). People with ASPD are manipulative, violent and often delinquents posing a threat to the
social fabric of any society. In the United States, approximately 3% of the population suffers
from antisocial personality disorder (Lenzenweger et al, 2007). Current research on Sociopathy
focuses on its diagnosis, treatment and the factors, both biological and psychological, which lead
to ASPD. Treatments available for ASDP are psychotherapy, antipsychotic drugs and mood
stabilizers. Therapy in cases is not very effective as sociopaths refuse treatment because they do
not recognize that they have ASPD. Drugs and mood stabilizers simply check the aggressive and
violent impulses of sociopaths. There is no known cure for ASPD.
To determine how well the treatments currently offered work, research needs to be done
on the effectiveness of these treatment methods for people with ASPD. It is also imperative to
investigate the role of different factors on the efficacy of the treatment. This research project will
provide an overview of recent research on biological and psychological factors in relation to
sociopathy and seek to understand how they influence severity and ...
