Welcome to Week 5. This week, you will be learning about instructional design and creating your own 3 day math unit! If this seems overwhelming, try not to worry too much. You will be using a 3 Day Unit Plan template, which will help ensure you do not forget any important components. You can find the 3-Day Unit template in the College of Education site in the Student Success Center. As you design your unit, you are going to be pulling together everything you’ve learned so far about aligning standards, formative and summative assessments, differentiation, developmentally appropriate resources/materials, and academic vocabulary.Our objectives this week are:Design developmentally appropriate unit plans for teaching mathematics that are standards-based and include appropriate sequencing of learning experiences.Plan assessments that are aligned to content standards and are designed to address individual student needs, and to support, verify, and document student learning.Your study materials for the week will also help provide some background knowledge for yourself on mathematics instructional design. Also, even though you do not have any textbooks readings included in your study materials, it is a fantastic resource if you need more information about differentiation and assessment. Specific chapters which you might find helpful are: Chapter 4 (Differentiating Instruction), Chapter 5 (Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students) and Chapter 6 (Teaching and Assessing Students with Exceptionalities). Also, as you’re thinking about designing lessons, keep in mind that your textbook has a multitude of activities sprinkled throughout Chapters 8-11 that focus on building number sense, developing basic fact fluency, building whole number place value concepts and strategies for whole number computation.In addition, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you take the time to watch the GCU COE Lesson Plan template help as it offers very detailed information on multiple means of representation, multiple means of engagement and multiple means of expression. Building a foundation for math requires repetition and multiple opportunities to practice a skill in a variety of contexts to ensure mastery.For this assignment, select one or more state math standards for your field experience grade level.Using the “3 Day Unit Plan Template,” create a three-day math unit plan based on the selected standards.APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.This assignment uses a rubric. A learning profile is defined as the way in which “people ‘come at’ learning” and includes learning style, intelligence preferences, culture, and gender (Sousa & Tomlinson, 2012, p. 137). Consider for a moment how you like to learn best. Do you feel like you learn better in a learning environment that caters to your specific learning profile? After reflecting on this question, you will participate in a debate regarding learning styles (a component of one’s learning profile), which is a highly controversial topic among respected researchers and psychologists. After reading Chapter 7, the following article, “Are learning styles invalid? (Hint:No)” and the following video Learning Styles Don't Exist (http://www.selladore.com/coachtolearn/7.LearningStyles/LS-critVAK.html), you will debate the following topic. Is it important for educators to know the learning style of their students? For this debate, you will be assigned to a particular debate group based on the first letter of your last name. Last Names N-Z: Learning styles are not important - This is the debate group for my last name. Debate Process: Using the information in the course text, from the additional sources provided, and your own research utilizing the Ashford Online Library, develop an argument that supports your assigned side and post it in the discussion. Your argument must be supported by the literature to give validity and evidence for your argument. Be sure to explain why learning styles are or are not important for use in the classroom. Finally, post your own (personal) opinion based on the arguments, research, and your own experience(s). Explain what you believe is the best way to differentiate for learning styles. How have your initial thoughts on this debate changed based on the research and dialogue you have had for this discussion question? My views are that Learning styles are important.
