1. Burke asserts that without identification there can be no persuasion. First, consider the validity of his statement. Can you think of instances when identification (or division) is not part of persuasion? Also, what other theories have we learned about this summer that support and/or refute his assertion? Make sure to explain how they have supported and/or refuted his assertion. 2. Narrative fidelity suggests that good reasons (meaning based upon values) is how we determine if a story “rings true.” Consider then why might evil or wrongheaded stories be persuasive? What values might they appeal to that might not be good or humane but that nonetheless might be fundamental to human nature? 3. Compare how the Elaboration Likelihood Model says persuasion occurs with Aristotle’s guidance/instructions on persuasion? What are the areas where the two theories reach agreement about how persuasion occurs? Explain how they do so. What are the areas where the two theories are incompatible or contradictory? Explain why you find them so. Finally, which theory do you find more compelling to explain persuasion and why? [A better answer might also include why the other theory is less compelling.]

COMMUNICATION THEORY
Introduction
Identification will distinguish rhetorical perspective from the tradition focus on
persuasion. Identification, however, does not dismiss the focus on belief but will help ensure that
persuasion is viewed as an explicit and intentional act. Identification is a process that is central to
communication, and the need to identify will usually occur due to division (Burke,
1969).Overcoming division and guilt will involve understanding the realization that there are
differences between ourselves. Overcoming division will require looking at ways of
understanding interests, attitudes, values, experiences as well as perceptions and material
properties. Human beings have a need to identify resources for those interested in joining or
persuading us.
People always seek to be associated with certain individuals or groups and attain a
position in social relations. Human beings identify ways of using language as a symbolic action
and language is a form of identifying in the world. There are different circumstances where
identification is not part of persuasion (Burke, 1969).Burke realizes that identification rather than
persuasion is critical. Identification can be accomplished through self-persuasion, and social
cohesion can be promoted through the use of identification. Another method of identification is
through the use of recurrence and in such a scenario rhetoric cannot be understood regarding a
deliberate and direct strategy that can be used to persuade the audience.
It involves considering processes that are semi-conscious and less than mundane.
Identification will usually focus on theoretical attention rather than persuasion. It is, therefore,
necessary for people to resist the forces of persuasion. Furthermore, the nature of language as
well as human nature make the implicit and explicit elements of the persuasive appeal to people
in different interactions (Fisher,1989).Identification is the function of sociality and the

experience of sociality one that involves shifting identifications. The major choice that people
want will include identifying which credentials are acceptable. Language use in social life is
inevitable, and therefore persuasion cannot be avoided. It will, therefore, involve locating all
correlations and furthermore correlating to these correlations. Persuasion is, therefore, a
complicated and rich phenomenon in the communication process.
Evil or wrongheaded stories can still be persuasive, and this is because people base their
decisions on the merits of reasoning through evidence. The rational analysis will realize that each
has their values and beliefs, Make decisions as to whether a story is a bad or good will, therefore,
rely on independent reasoning (Dillard & Pfau,2002).Fidelity will, therefore, be an issue of much
importance and this is based on whether or not an individual story is true. If a story matches
personal beliefs and experiences, then it is acceptable. Fidelity will be concerned with whether
the story fits into the background of the world as it is known to the reader of the story. The
