Your literature review is critical in establishing a sound research approach. This literature review is a first-step in identifying issues that are relevant and worthwhile for a research study proposal. Using resources from journal articles, text and other secondary sources, you must define a research problem and/or a need for additional information on a particular issue. • • • • • Your literature review must do the following: Be organized around and related to the research questions you are developing Synthesize results into a summary of what is known and what is not known Summary/grouping of others’ views/approaches (not fact reporting) – i.e., how have others dealt with the problem? Remember, you will not find twenty articles that on your exact topic. Rather, you should look at various themes within your research. As an example: Title: Relationship between Wine Involvement and Wine Related Travel Sub-Theme 1: Involvement and leisure travel Sub-Theme 2: Involvement with wine Sub-Theme 3: Wine consumption and wine tourism Notes regarding originality of research and literature review focus: Though original research pursuits are encouraged, you may wish to ‘revise’ an existing study for your research proposal. For example, a study of foreign student perceptions of Australia might be modified to develop a study of foreign student perceptions of Toronto. This practice is acceptable however; if going this route, you must identify new resources for your literature review. Final Notes: A literature review is not a list describing or summarizing one piece of literature after another. It is usually a bad sign to see every paragraph beginning with the name of a researcher. Instead, organize the literature review into sections that present themes or identify trends, including relevant theory.
