Section #1
Mega Cities
A mega city can be described as a metropolitan area whose total human
population is in excess of ten million people. By referring to a mega city as a
metropolitan area, it means that such a city is a region which consists of a densely
populated central core surrounded by highly industrialized neighborhood. A mega city
is always characterized by very modern infrastructures that boost the living conditions
in such areas. Mega cities usually act as key economic and political regions to the
nations where such cities are found (Fuchs, p.7). Currently Tokyo is the world largest
mega city. For instance, Tokyo is so large that it has been able to swallow the
neighboring cities of Yokohama, Kawasaki and Chiba. The population of Tokyo is
approximately 38 million people. Its infrastructure is very efficient.
Infill Development
Infill development refers to the process of developing existing areas in the
already developed urban areas that are vacant or were underused. This process was
initialized when it was found out that most communities are in possession of land
within the city which was left behind in the course of urbanization for whatever
reasons. A very successful infill development program should concentrate of building
complete and functioning neighborhoods rather than just the development of

construction law and regulations to development, long permit procedures, substandard
framework, and troublesome land assembly, site sullying and different conditions
should be addressed to allow successful infill advancement (Steinacker, p.8).
Sustainable Development
In this 21st century the term sustainable development is very common. This is
because all living things are struggling to make use of the available scarce resources
without depleting them so that the future generations are assured of their existence.
Sustainable development, therefore, is a process where human beings try as much as
possible to meet their goals and at the same time making sure that the natural systems
are sustained. This is done so that the natural system may be able to provide the
natural resources which are highly depended on by society and economy. The
ultimate or required result on any sustainable development undertaking is the arrival
of a state in the society where human being continue to live in good conditions and
meet all their needs without the undermining of the integrity and stability of natural
systems. Although sustainable development is a good idea, it still receives criticisms
from people who think that such a process is not possible to non-renewable resources
(Giddings, Hopwood, & O'brien, p.10).
