Description

Begin Final Research Paper

The Final Research Paper provides an opportunity to be creative with your own integrative understanding of the theory and application of Addiction, Compulsive Behaviors and comorbidity.

The focus of this paper is to choose an area of research that is relevant and pertinent to the current diagnosis and treatment of the Substance Related Disorders, Behavioral Addictions and Psychiatric Disorders. You are encouraged to utilize the Internet and the University Virtual Library to access current literature and information to enhance your analysis for this Final Research Paper.

The following guidelines will help you prepare for your Final Research Paper:

Prepare a comprehensive Research Paper* aligned with the focus of this course. Your paper must include research on the co-occurrence of at least one diagnosis from each of the following groups:

Drug or alcohol use (choose 1)
Eating, gambling or other behavioral addiction (choose 1)
Psychiatric or personality disorder (choose 1)

The following are a few examples of how you might approach your research paper:
- A research based paper on the relationship of alcohol use with gambling addiction and attention deficit disorder
- A research based paper on the relationship of cocaine use with sexual addiction and bipolar disorder
- A research based paper on the relationship of amphetamine use with bulimia, posttraumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder

• The topic MUST be justified by your understanding of the prevalent research on the diagnosis and treatment of addiction and comorbidity

• Integrate a discussion of how you see your research findings as significant to your clinical work or the field of psychology in general

• Illustrate an understanding by giving examples from your own life or clinical practice that supports your research

Select a minimum of eight (8) current research articles* taken from scholarly journals (online or hard copy) on your selected topic. You may use the articles in the Bibliography section under Resources in your syllabus.

* Do not use the course text for this assignment. This is a research-based paper.

Paper is to be 10-12 pages total plus title and reference pages based on addiction and co-occurring disorders

COCAINE USAGE, HYPER-SEXUALITY AND BIPOLAR DISORDER
ABSTRACT
Bipolar disorder is one of the mood disorders that possess numerous comorbidities.
This includes elevated sexual desire which is hazardous to the bipolar patient. This research
paper will examine how cocaine triggers the hyper sexuality of patients with bipolar disorder.
The study was done on 40 patients in four hospitals. The findings confirmed that bipolar
disorder, hyper sexuality and substance abuse were intertwined. The recommendation
favoured the use of cognitive behaviour therapy as the ultimate treatment for bipolar disorder
and co-occurring disorders.
KEY WORDS: Bipolar Disorder, Hyper-Sexuality, Cocaine Usage, Commorbidity

The Relationship Cocaine Use to Sexual Risk Behaviour in Patients with Co-Occurring
Bipolar Disorder
Introduction
Comorbidity refers to the diagnosis of two or more symptoms in the same patient.
Bipolar disorder usually coexists with various disorders inclusive of substance use. Mood
disorders usually affect the sexual desires of an individual and are more elevated by the use
of substances. Perilous sexual behaviour is more prevalent amongst individuals with bipolar
disorder and cocaine abusers. Individuals with bipolar disorder engage in higher rates of
sexually risky behaviour. Bipolar disorder is a disorder characterised by manic episodes that
are depressive and usually alter the mood of the individuals characterized by the disorder.
The symptoms of the disorder include hyper-sexuality, increased energy, high energy levels
and hyperactivity. Cocaine usage alters brain how the brain’s basics (Di Nicola, Tedeschi,
Mazza, Martinotti, Harnic, Catalano, Janiri, 2010).
The result of the alteration of the brain leads to the inability to control brain impulses.
This research paper will critically evaluate the relationship between cocaine usage, risky
sexual behaviour and bipolar disorder. It will critically examine hyper sexuality, cocaine
usage and bipolar disorder in order to offer a framework as to how the relationship between
the three can be broken.
Three scenarios can play out for this relationship to be witnessed. In the first scenario,
the cocaine might increase the already existing bipolar disorder to play itself out. The second
scenario is that the mental illness can lead to drug abuse while the third scenario is that it can
be caused by underlying vulnerabilities or reminders of events of stressful nature. Based on
numerous surveys, patients with bipolar disorder usually register higher rates of cocaine

usage in comparison to the normal population. Cocaine users have a higher prevalence of
risky behaviour.
Substance abuse and bipolar disorder are said to occur together. Cocaine users who
double up as suffering from a co-morbid psychiatric condition usually are at a high risk of
myriad functional impairments. The tendency to make uninformed decisions usually leads to
an increase in impulsivity (Cousins, Butts, Young, 2009).
