Explain how fossils are used to determine the relative ages of rock layers.

Feb 16th, 2015

In rock layers that have not been highly disturbed, you will know that fossils found in deeper (lower) layers will be older than the ones found in shallower layers (closer to the ground surface). We know the deeper rocks are older relative to the shallower ones, but we don't necessarily know how much older.
