Technological advancements have greatly affected artworks and how they are done.
Artists must keep up with the changing world and keeping up with technological advancements
is one of the best ways of ensuring survival and relevance of art. Medieval art has changed in
how it is presented and done. Theses artistic works have also influenced the modern day
artworks and artists considering that it seems to be the source of inspiration.
In the medieval Europe (1400s), books were written manually by hand one at a time with
ink, pen, and brush. The fact that the books and manuscripts were written using hands means that
the writing process was expensive and time consuming. Monks and nuns were the first people
who made the mediaeval books in workshops called scriptorium in their monasteries. As the
demand for books continued to increase, the rulers (by then), built palace workshops that
employed both scribes and religious persons to help in writing the books. Books and manuscripts
were written in well prepared animal skins either vellum, which was soft and fine or on
parchment, which was relatively shinier and heavy than the vellum. Preparation of inks and
paints required an experienced person and shades such as green and blue were made from
expensive semiprecious stones. A book such as the Book of Durrow, done in the year 800, has a
format that reflects the Roman Catholic Models but paintings that are a reflection of an
encyclopedia of Hiberno-Saxon designs of the 7th century.

Codex greatly influenced the development of books in the west by affecting how books
were written and continues to be written. Codex was revolutionary and enabled people to have
access to larger printed books. The development of books was informed by Codex, which
allowed many pages to be stacked together in an accessible manner. The emergence of Codex
was driven by the demand for readable and larger books by Christians and the invention of
Codex, as a form of writing books, was of great importance. In the west, larger books, with pages
attached to each other could be developed and this made it easy to read. Codex has greatly
influenced the modern day books as books writing and biding styles derive from this form.
