hello here is the essay

Adult Illiteracy
Name
Institution

Illiteracy is simply be defined by the National Center for Education Statistics
(2002) as the state in which a person is unable to use printed or written information so
that he or she achieve hi or her goals in the society by developing one's knowledge
and potential. The inability revolves around various skills associated with the
processing of information that the adults utilize in their day to day activities in places
such as school, work, community and even personal lives (Burggraf, 2002). this
paper will mainly deal with the various aspects on adult illiteracy such as its causes,
why it is a societal problem and lastly the global statistical finding that adult illiteracy
is still a major problem to the society.
Reasons for adult illiteracy
There are at least three suggestion on the types of adult literacy that exists in the
society. The tree types include; school, community and personal literacy (Gallegos &
Hollingsworth, 2002).

The two authors say the community has been made to believe

that school literacy is the only important type of literacy. These have left many adults
to believe that what takes place in school is the act of reading and writing with the
aim of scoring good grades. This though often places the adults in a situation where
they are unable and unwilling to use the past negative images in their minds in order
for them to become more literate.
Nespor suggests another reason why adults are still illiterate in the society. He
suggests that the overuse of labels and groups. Adults who adhere to the arguments
would at the end view themselves as weak or non-readers even after leaving school.
Low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence which often lead to the adults not being
able to look for literacy help is caused by these labels (Nespor, 2001).

The next reason for illiteracy spins around some unique type of reading attitude. The
unique type of reading include the direct impact of reading, belief on the results of
reading, belief in the culture and norms, the cultural ordeal that learners experience
with reading, the personal experience of the learner when reading, what the learner
prefers when choosing what to read and how the learner gauges the importance of
reading (McKenna, 2001). The above-stated reasons are also linked with the inability
to read. McKenna contends that each experience that a kid has in school influences
him or her either positively or adversely. Those with negative experience came to see
school as a terrible ordeal and not on which they wish to take an interest in. Schools
who just advance school proficiency and don't esteem the demeanor and support of
students risks disengaging the students forever. This disengagement moves over to
into adulthood ignorance. A disengaged student rapidly abandons school and sees it as
a place that is not for him or her. This kind of learner never put into importance the
educational procedure and frequently does not see it as profitable. He or she may stick
it out to acquire a certificate, yet at the same time graduate with negligible abilities
and are practically uneducated.
The background of a family can also lead to adult illiteracy. It seems that
illiteracy and poverty always work in the same cycle. A child that is raised in a family
that does not have literate people or people who do not value literacy, the same child
will grow up ignoring any activity that is linked with instilling literacy in him or her.
The parents due to their illiteracy are also unable to offer help to their child as literacy
activities continue becoming complex. The cycle continues since the child grows up
to become an illiterate parent and will raise his or her child in the same way. The only
way that adult illiteracy can be done away with is by breaking this cycle.

Unfortunately, the cycle is a hard nut to break due to reasons such as shame,
indifference, and programs that exist that never suit the needs of the adult learners.

Adult Illiteracy as a societal problem
Many countries experience adult illiteracy as a huge problem. A country with
adult illiteracy will always find it hard to prosper both economically and socially....
