George Cohan is popularly considered the father of American comedy and the first
American theater megastar. Cohan is attributed to the fabrication of a bridge to close the gap
between drama and music in what is currently termed as “book musical”. Cohan’s parents were
Vaudeville performers who traveled across the state's towns and cities, where he would often
join them on stage. By the end of his glorious and long career, Cohan had many professions,
including that of a producer, an actor, playwright, lyricist, entertainer, singer, and dancer. Cohan
is to date remembered mostly for his standards “over there”, “The Yankee Doodle Boy”, and
“Give My Regards to Broadway”.
George Cohan revolutionized the American theater by fusing the European Operetta
traditions with the American musical entertainment. This fusion gave rise and prominence to
theatricals of a genre like vaudeville and burlesque. Even though he was born to Irish Catholic
parents, Cohan has been described as the most indigenous American entertainer. His early
inception into the world of entertainment by his parents together with his sister can be attributed
