Introduction
During the Great Depression, the infant theater industry was hugely affected, leading to
the closure of many studios, as well as theaters. The federal government embarked on what was
termed as Federal Project Number One projects, with the theater being among those key
economic stimuli programs. The plan was based on creating a special fund for the theater
industry across the country to see actors, editors, producers, and performers get back to work.
The Great Depression had left many of the actors and generally, theater-related jobs remained
relatively hard to come by.
Although theater is closely related to culture than the economy, the project was created as
a relief program to aid in assisting the infant industry to get back to its knees. Hallie Flanagan
was picked as the director to oversee the distribution and organization of the project which was
funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Flanagan administration encouraged
experimentation of relevant arts, new forms, and techniques of genres, and ultimately made it
possible for millions of US citizens to set their eyes on live theater. However, after close to 3
years of running, the project came to its end following pressure from the left-wing Congress
citing minimal production against the spending.
