In organizations, leadership and management are used interchangeably. However, there
are differences in the roles played by the leaders and the managers. The orientation of these
personnel is different in an organization. A leader refers to an individual with an ability to
motivate, influence, and enable other people to contribute towards the achievement of an
organizational goal. On the other hand, a manager is a person who can direct and control another
person or a group of people or entities to coordinate, harmonize, and mobilize resources towards
accomplishing a goal (Zaleznik, 2015). The following is an analysis of the differences between
leadership and management concerning healthcare organization.
While leadership is oriented to people, management is oriented to the task. The key role
of a leader is to lead people. These could be an individual or a group undertaking a particular
activity. In an organization, the leaders give the direction to the entire workforce. The workers
include personnel in management and the other process line. The manager, on the other hand,
controls the resources for efficiency. The resources may be regarding labor, time, and finance.
The managers ensure a certain task is completed within the available means. The key role is to
make sure that a particular task has been completed satisfactorily.

The leaders focus mostly on people, while the managers focus on work. Leading people
in an organization is the role of a leader. He or she shows the direction to be followed by setting
goals ensuring that everyone in the organization is headed towards achieving the particular goal.
The manager in the same organization provides accomplishment of all tasks and sub-tasks that
are on the way towards achieving the set goal.



The leaders in an organization focus on achievement of goals. On the hand, the managers
focus on the results. The realization of the set goal is the focus of the leader while the results
gained in the course of the achievement is the focus of a manager. A goal may be achieved
without results. In that scenario, the manager will have failed despite working in the same line
with the leader.
The leaders are problem solvers while the managers are policy implementers. The leader
studies a problem a device means of solving it using creative solution. Then, they use their
commitment and charisma to excite, focus, and motivate others to address the problem using the
devised means (Dreachslin, 2007). The managers make policies, methods, and strategies to form
teams and combine ideas to achieve a smooth running. The manager can empower people
through solicitation of views, principles, and values. As such, they work on a belief that
combination of these values will reduce risks and drive success.
The leaders take risks while managers averse risks. The leaders will take the risk so long
as the investment will generate reasonable returns. The level of risk taking will depend on the
expected returns. Further, since they are visionary people, they will try to maximize the expected
returns (Dreachslin, 2007). The maximization will result from taking risks. On the other hand,
since the managers are result oriented, they will averse from risks to maintain the flow of results.
As such, they will not innovate new means of solving problems but will only implement the
known and standard ways.
Leaders facilitate decision making by giving options while the managers are involved in
decision-making. The process of decision-making is comprehensive and may require the
intervention of leaders in an organization. When a leader sets goals, he or she has several means
