Description
Midsummer Night’s Dream is a complex comedy with a rather large number of characters who are split into three categories: the Athenians, the Fairies, and the Mechanicals (or craftsmen). The juxtaposition of the categories mentioned above drives the plot and movement of the play.
In your paper, describe the main characteristics of each of these three categories. Then, discuss how they relate to each other. For instance, the play opens with the introduction of the Athenian world. What problems surface in this world and how are they complicated and/or resolved in the world of the Fairies? How does the world of the Mechanicals deal with these problem(s)?
There is no research requirement for this paper. Rather than basing your paper on research, it is highly recommended that you rely extensively on direct quotations from the text as evidence for your argument. When discussing main characteristics and relationships between the categories, be sure to include the imagery and the language used to describe the category as well as the speech, appearance, and mannerisms of the characters. Refer to specific lines from the play in order to help you build support.
