Your thesis (one sentence)
Reasons (three to four sentences)
Conclusion sentence (one sentence)

One important controversy in the United States is whether marijuana should be legalized. Some
voices-coming from experts and lay people as well-claim only medical marijuana should be
legalized, while others believe that both medical and recreational marijuana should be legal; on
the other hand, some voices oppose the legalization of any type of marijuana. The present paper
argues the problems brought by conflicting evidence can be solved by comparing the evidence in
favor and against of marijuana legalization-whether medical or recreational. Determining
whether legalizing marijuana can have more positive or negative effects is important in order to
guide policy makers with the hope that they will consider what research has to say on the matter.
In a time where more and more jurisdictions have legalized medical and/or recreational
marijuana and many jurisdictions are considering doing the same in the future, it seems relevant
to take a look at the experience gained by the jurisdictions that have legalized marijuana in order
to guide decisions in jurisdictions which have not yet legalized it. It is concluded that the
evidence gathered suggests that the benefits for legalizing both medical and recreational
marijuana outweigh the costs.
The topic is Legalization of Marijuana in the United States. The pros of this particular argument
include but are not limited to the following: A reduced intake of marijuana lowers the crime rate, it
improves public health, increases the tax revenue collected by the states because people are more
concentrated on their work, stimulates the economy’s growth and development, bolsters traffic
safety, and reduces criminal expenditures. On the other hand, the general cons of marijuana
legalization include the following; marijuana intake has led to an increase in the number of student
dropout in schools, reduces teen education achievement, and increase infertility among adults.
Some controversy also revolves around the questioning at to the health effects of marijuana to
the users and whether it is sustainable in the long-run. Most of the supporters tend to believe that
marijuana improves the health of the users since it is used, in certain cases, for treatments of terminal
diseases and others. The specific pros side of the controversy is that those who support the idea of
legalization tend to argue that it has positive effects on the health sector especially in the treatment of

diseases. They also say that marijuana does not contain any harmful components like normal cigarettes;
in that they cause terminal diseases like cancer. The con side of this particular controversy is that the
naysayers argue legalization of marijuana has caused a sharp increase in crime and traffic accidents.
They also tend to believe that an increase in crime among the youth population is a result of the
legalization of marijuana. The thesis statement that legalization of marijuana has many more potential
benefits as opposed to being detrimental to our society.
