    Before we embark on any explanations it would be very important for us to identify the key
    terms that we are going to encounter in this assignment. This is to enable us to be able to
    effectively understand how determinate and indeterminate sentences occur.
    ** Determinate – this simply refers to a jail term that has a given period of time/length of time
    and this period cannot be altered by any parole or agency. For example, if one is sentenced to 6
    months in a county jail, they must serve this timing not unless it is affected by good behavior,
    work-leases or other alternatives but not by any parole.
    ** Indeterminate – this simply refers to a jail term that deals with the minimum and maximum
    sentence that one gets. This is prone to change by a parole or an agency that wants to re-do the
    case. The sentence given can also be affected by various issues such as good behavior, worklease or any other relevant action one does while in prison.
    ** Victim impact statement – this refers to that statement that is given by a victim of a certain
    case in a court of law. This is given mostly by those who have been affected the first hand and
    are very much affected by this. The main purpose is to enable the affected party to recover from
    the ordeal because once they share it, they tend to feel free and that justice will be served. It can
    also be used in decision making in cases where the involved party's emotions and relations are
    needed in a particular case.
