Working in the social services field as a case manager in a general population and in an
M.I.C.A shelter for the last four years has made me realize my passion in helping the homeless.
Deciding to apply for the social work master’s degree will give me the opportunity to put book
knowledge with work experiences together in the field in which I have been blessed to
understand in the middle of difficulties there lies an opportunity to help create an open door for
those who are less fortunate.
Having over 35 years in business, finance and accounting have been an extrinsic reward
which was leaving me feeling desensitized from the world issues but working in the social
services field has an intrinsic reward which makes me know that I did something right, or I
helped someone and made their day better.
After reading the MSW the three-year online plan in clinical social work at Rutgers
University School of Social Work I strongly feel the connection with my current work life as a
case manager as well, my goal to excel in the social work field and to become a director of
clinical, Rutgers University School of Social Work would be a guiding light to my road of
success in my professional career.
Looking back over my life there were family members that faced many obstacles such as:
mental illness, alcohol and substance abuse, sexual orientation, and homelessness. I never
understood why my cousins, and uncles would face such obstacles but as I was growing up my
parents never allowed us to look down on them but they would say, “Their life took a difference
Working for Samaritan Village, and Clermont Residence both are general population men
shelters and Camba-M.I.C.A-Atlantic House Men’s Shelter has given me the opportunities to use
the following life skills such as: active listening, soft skill, emotional intelligence, organization,
critical thinking, tolerance, empathy, setting boundaries, communication, and inner strength.
Through my personal values and professional experiences there is an equilibrium that
helped me make an affected decision.
Homelessness in relation to social problems. I believe professional social workers can
help alleviate issue by using evidence based practices. Working with the homelessness, we tend
to listen to unique stories.
