There were approximately 11.9million unauthorized immigrants living in the United
states as at 2008. It is estimated that there are 500,000 new entrants arriving every year over the
last decade (Hanson, Gordon H.). This puts the total figure to date at approximately 17 million.
With such a huge population of undocumented people living and working in the United States, it
is high time that Immigration reforms were discussed. Immigration reform represents an effort
by the U.S. Congress to strengthen and streamline U.S. immigration laws. According to the
Legal Information Institute, the Act, which was designed in 1996. It aims at improving border
control by imposing criminal penalties for racketeering, alien smuggling and the use of creation
of fraudulent immigration documents. It has also increased interior enforcement of monitoring
visa abusers and application by the relevant agencies.
One of the major issues brought up by the ‘against’ team is that the growing number of
immigration drives up the native born American unemployment rate. It is no secret that illegal
immigrants are a source of cheap labor. By tacitly illegal and ultimately cheap employment, the
United States government left its regulation to the market which increased the inflow of
unauthorized labor to curb the demand for cheap labor. This went on until 2006 when the
