Abstract
Adult illiteracy refers to the state of adults being unable to read and write effectively.
This is a global problem that has affected major parts of United States of America and other
regions of the world. There are various causes of illiteracy in society; such as unprivileged
parents with little education, lack of proper academic materials at home for people to practice,
being unable to complete school, reduced level of economic status; and various human learning
complications such as dyslexia and dysorthography among other key and important factors of
concern. Currently, the world is made of millions of adults who are illiterate; substantiated by the
above-identified factors. Illiteracy has proved to be a great obstacle to the efforts of ensuring that
all humanity complies with globalization changes. I have a strong feeling that all people in the
world have a cardinal role in ensuring that this societal issue is addressed. Adult illiteracy is a
world global issue that is present in society and caused by a range of factors, and it needs
everyone’s efforts to defeat the global issue and more specifically requires the participation of
people, community organizations, business, and government.

Background information
The issue of the global adult illiteracy has been critical in defining the economic
performance of people, societies, and nations. Specifically, there is a high relationship between
the financial performance of given community or country and the level of illiteracy. This is
evident by the proof that the majority of the industrialized States of Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) are majorly associated with different forms of factors of
production. For instance, high levels of competition, high skills and competencies as well as the
unmatched forms of competitive advantage in the competitive business industries.

Therefore this nation, are wit no doubt require a high level of adult literacy which who
will be critical in enabling and enhancing the sustainability of productions and productivity of
the economy. Similarly, one can also make a conclusion that these developed and industries
countries have been able to maintain their economic performance of the availability of the formal
and informal education. Which have increasingly accelerated growth and development through
the provision of skills, expertise and other human resources which are essential for the
improvement of their economic performances.
This is indeed contrary to other countries which are characterized by high illiteracy levels
which make them not capable of coping up with the necessities of proper forms of economic
production in the industry including the human resource or labour which are coupled with high
skills and talents. This is also strengthened because there are increased skills which are needed
for work should be of high technology and standard to enable quality and efficiency. Therefore,
one of the only sure way of improving the economic performances of these nations which are
considered developing or undeveloped in the improvement of the adult illiteracy levels.
The problem of adult illiteracy conceived as a result of the discrepancies and differences
in the mode of production together with the work performance of the concerned countries. The
interested nations were determined to measure the level of literacy with the aim of identifying
the production mode as well as the work performances of these countries. The measurement
discovered that there are low levels of illiteracy in the industrialized nations of Organizations for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
However, the analysis also concluded that there are high levels of illiteracy in the least
developed nations which also significantly hampered the peaceful industrialization efforts. Both
the industrialized and developing countries have come up with measures to address the issue of

adult illiteracy with the aim of reducing and eliminating these menace in the society as it has
significantly influenced the economic performance of these States. The role of the adult literacy
to the economic performance of the country should be examined to ensure their industrialization
of the underdeveloped nations (Bentan, et al., 1992).
