Costco Wholesale was the fourth among the largest wholesale retailers in America and the sixth
largest in the world. The blood behind this immense success was Jim Sinegal who was a
sensation to many and brought out the best for the company. Started in 1983, the company
opened its first store in Seattle and by the end of the year, it had spread to other states as well.
During the same year, another membership wholesale business was set up by Walmart by the
name Sam’s Club who were directly competing with Costco for primarily the same market base.
However, Costco wholesale business thrived even as Jim became a household name. His
celebrity status probably giving the company a better position in the market.
As a result, Costco continued excelling in business, spreading to countries such as Canada,
United Kingdom, Korea and japan among others by 2006 and having whooping 59 billion dollars
in sales by the same period. This success could be traced directly to the business model, strategy
and the philosophy that the business employed. The mission was to give the customers quality
goods and services and do that at the lowest prices possible. The strategy employed by the
company entailed having local brands which had been successful and having them availed at
consistent prices. Instead of the traditional approach where retailers look forward to making the
