In the 1600s and 1700s, confinement was the primary method used to punish criminal in
Europe. Before that, isolation was used for; detaining offenders before trial, the prisoners were
held as they waited for either death penalty or corporal punishment, being pressurized to pay
debts and fines, holding and punishing the slaves, giving the offenders indoctrination of religion
and also spiritual reformation, people were confined if they had quarantine diseases.
Before the large-scale use of confinement, punished of the offenders included inflicting
pain in their bodies. The criminals were punished in public so as to feel humiliated and to deter
the other people from committing crimes. These offenders got heavy fines; their properties were
confiscated and given capital and corporal punishment to be a lesson to others/onlookers.
Confinement began during the Enlightenment –era reforms where confinement was
considered a better way of deterring and reforming criminals that the earlier used method.
