Question description

Discussion: Antigone

Follow your teacher's instructions to post the following discussion entry.

Antigone buried her brother even though the King said it was against the law. She thought it was important to honor her brother and that the law was wrong. Was Antigone right? How could she have solved the problem without breaking the law?

Should you obey the law even if you think it is wrong?

Imagine that you are sitting in a classroom. The teacher has made the rule that students may not get out of their seats without permission. The person sitting next you is whispering mean things to you and you want to move. You raise your hand to ask permission to move, but your teacher askes you to wait. You wait, but your teacher never calls on you. The person next to you continues to say mean things, and you are feeling really uncomfortable. Is it right to break the teacher's rule and get up? How could you solve the problem without breaking the rule?

Should you obey rules even if it isn't working in the current situation?

Compare Antigone's situation to a modern-day situation where a person might break the law or a rule because they think the law/rule is wrong or not working?

  • Begin by summarizing Antigone's situation
  • Tell whether she was right or wrong, in your opinion
  • Offer another solution to her problem
  • Describe a modern-day situation
  • Tell whether it is right or wrong to break the law/rule in that situation, in your opinion
  • Offer another solution to the problem
  • Compare the two
