Description

To study history is to study both change and continuity over time. In other words, history tells us not just about the past, but about the past’s relationship to the present. For your final paper, I’d like you to draw on the history of slavery, the Civil War, emancipation, Reconstruction, or any other topic we've covered to shed light on a contemporary social issue or political debate. Like all history papers, this paper should have a central thesis or argument. Your comparison should be neither facile nor overwrought. For example:

Use this assignment to write on something that you’re passionate about or that has dominated the news in recent months. What does the abolitionist debate about violence tell us about the ethics of punching white supremacists? How does the Fugitive Slave Act get us to think differently about immigrant raids and travel bans? Does the violent Southern response to the gains of Reconstruction offer any lessons for thinking about contemporary conservative responses to gains in women’s and LGBT rights?

Introduction

Slavery in America is a topic that has to be explored now more than ever. Citizens must
be informed about the context of the United States. Enslaved people are kept by white citizens,
regardless of the fact that this system and extent of race prejudice have been abolished. This not
only allows one to understand more about the nation in which they live, but it also demonstrates
to its population how freedom was earned for all. The following essay will analyze slavery in the
United States and explain how it had a huge influence on the lives of all Americans. It will also
cover different Civil War events and contain a discussion of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation.

As stated in the introduction, slavery occurred during a time when the United States of
America was not a desirable destination for African immigrants. If a black individual was
spotted in a major metropolitan area, irrespective of their exempt status, he or she may be
captured and sold to slaveholders. Despite the fact that these people had families and
employment, their liberties were violated by other residents because of their skin color, which
was the primary source of prejudice (Losurdo, 2019). It is a well-known truth that racist
attitudes are now frowned upon in the United States. People with black complexion, on the other
hand, were classified as members of a lesser racial caste throughout the infamous American
Revolution (Thirty-Ninth Congress of the USA). Citizens of Arabic, Hispanic, and other nonwhite cultural backgrounds were not regarded as slaves but rather free racial minorities.

The majority of African slaves were forced to labor on cotton fields owned by CSA
businessmen. They also labored on farmland, factories, and other establishments that required
low-cost labor. As noted earlier in the magazine, black people were not paid for their services. In

addition, their living circumstances were appalling: they lacked access to safe drinking water,
mattresses, and private rooms, among other things. Many black people, it is fair to say, could not
stomach living in such circumstances (Narayanan & Pritchett, 2021). Their lives were brief, with
the bulk of them succumbing to weariness and tiredness. If a slave's owner recognized that a
specific individual worked hard and gave his or her slaveholder a lot of money, that person might
be treated better than others who were enslaved. The bulk of those who had their rights taken
away had to work in fields for more than twelve hours every day in the scorching sun. They
couldn't take vacations or days off.

The issue with enslavement worsened, with white people disregarding African-American
liberties, and the US authorities became deeply concerned about their emancipation (ThirtyNinth Congress of the USA). Slaves appeared to be the driving force behind practically all
companies in the CSA's regions at the time. Civil rights for African-Americans ...
