A management system is a basic policy framework or a step by step documented method
that is utilized by organizations to enable the smooth functioning of operations through the
establishment of standard practices (Storey, 2007). They are most valuable for organizations that
have some parts of their operations franchised as they give information on how a business
enterprise is organized, how the organizational corporate policies are set and implemented, the
quality, monitoring and accounting procedures, employee recruitment and training, marketing
and management of the supply chain among other vital organizational procedures. Management
systems are designed to ensure that the organization operates in a manner that leads to the
achievement of their organizational goals and objectives (Storey, 2007). It should, therefore, be
noted that for an organization to be successful, its management system has to be in line with the
overall organizational strategic direction.
One key quality of a good management system is communication (Schein, 2003). The
management of an organization has to promote effective top down and bottom up
communication systems that discourage any form of intimidation or discrimination of some
employees. The views of all employees have to be considered even the clerical staff because
their duties also significantly contribute to general organizational growth. The cleaning staff for
instance can be encouraged to communicate to management about how equipment should be
arranged in the offices for easier navigation during cleaning and free flow of air. This not only
makes their work easier and enjoyable but promotes a conducive working environment for other
