In his book, Ritzer explores the concept of the McDonaldization and identifies the term to mean the
process of progressing from traditional modes of thought to new and advanced modes of thought. Ritzer
identifies that the fast-food industry or restaurant is primarily a representative of the modern paradigm in
modern societies. Ritzer uses McDonald as a model to demonstrate the McDonaldization of the society in
1990. McDonald is used as a metaphor for the society that has reconceptualized the idea of rationalization
(Ritzer, 2008). The restaurant presents a good example of over-rationalization in modern society as the
restaurants have replaced home-cooked meals with fast-food foods that are regarded as convenient and
practical. Increased rationalizations have gone beyond the fast food meal industry and have become
automated as well as uniform in the society. According to Ritzer, institutions, organizations, as well as the
society at large have adopted the features that are portrayed in fast-food industries and have eventually gone
beyond these characteristics through the process of over-rationalization (Ritzer, 2008). Ritzer provides that
certain changes in the society such as economy, science, technology, as well as culture have altered the
society from the traditional Weber’s bureaucracy to the McDonaldization social structure.
