Description

Positive psychology movement is attributed to Martin E. P. Seligman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who was appointed the President of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1998 and introduced his agenda to correct the trajectory of modern day “pathologically focused” psychology (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Seligman has done a great job of bringing the thoughts and ideas of past philosophers, researchers and scientists back to the spotlight, and those were: (a) Aristotle’s concepts of virtue and morality, (b) utilitarianism with concepts of subjective wellbeing and the pleasurable life, (c) William James’ concept of emotions (Hergenhahn & Henley, 2014).

Humanistic psychology appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a reaction to the predominant theories of psychoanalysis and behaviorism dominating the field, and the movement founders were Abraham Maslow, Rollo May and Carl Rogers (Raskin & Rogers, 2005). Humanistic psychology emphasized the study of the whole person believing that the behavior is determined by the perceptions, individuals are not exclusively the product of the environment or gens, and individuals have internal motivation and direction to achieve their potential (DeRobertis, 2016).

Serlin (2011) argued that humanistic psychology is needed now more than ever as it addresses connection and embodied experience, meaning and ethics, creativity and dreams, resilience and self-actualization that are critical aspects of humanity. However, Hackney (2007) stressed that positive psychology provides conceptual, methodological, institutional, and applicatory resources that are indispensable for psychologists. I think that both prospectives are very valuable and contribute to a better understanding of humans. It is difficult to choose one or the other; therefore, I would align my approach with Schneider (2014), who claimed that there are many ways for humanistic and positive psychology to collaborate by delineating the optimal portraits of human flourishing—depending on questions asked and objectives sought.

views and notions of previous theorists, scientists, as well as scholars. Some of them comprised of
the theories of Aristotle that dwelled on morality and virtue, utilitarianism that focused on the
theory of enjoyable life and individual wellbeing, and finally the t...
