The second noble truth of Buddhism states that greed or craving gives rise to suffering.
Greed or craving is symbolized by our worldly desires. It is not exclusive of material things; it
includes our self-serving thoughts and actions. Greed can encompass a lot of entities, those that
are tangible such as money and material possessions, and intangible ones such as power and
control. When a person is greedy, he/she wants every beneficial aspect to be of his/her
possession without other people having the same opportunities to have the same. A greedy
person does not want anyone to have more than or the same as what he/she has. It wants to be
above others. It tends to be continuous and progressive, because a greedy person never gets
satisfied. He/she will want more; he will oppress more people in the process.
Cravings are our wants for ourselves. It is in human nature to crave. It is our primitive
motivation to live by wanting our basic needs. But when cravings go beyond further from what
we need in life to survive and to help others, these become selfish wants.
